Roberto Araujo

About

From Mexico City to center stage.

Roberto Araujo is a Mexican-born, New York-based singer, actor and Bistro Award-winning cabaret artist whose career spans more than two decades on stages in Mexico, across the United States and around the world.

He began in his hometown of Mexico City in productions of Rent, Guys & Dolls and Cats, toured extensively throughout Latin America with the Disney Special Events Group, and was the singing voice of Joseph in DreamWorks’ animated feature Joseph: King of Dreams. In 1996 he played Henry of Anjou in the pop opera Anjou in Mexico and Calgary, a role that came full circle during the pandemic when Roberto produced the show’s English-language world premiere, Anjou: The Musical Horror Tale, a streaming concert benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and returned as Henry alongside Julia Murney, Caroline Bowman, Taylor Iman Jones and Shereen Pimentel.

Internationally, he toured Europe with Opera NY’s The Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber and China as Joe Vegas in Fame, The Musical. As a headline singer for Carnival Cruise Lines for several years, he conceived, directed and performed his first solo shows, Taking the Wheel and Spanglish.

Since moving to New York City in 2000, Roberto originated the role of Marco in the Off-Broadway hit Angelina Ballerina, The Musical and Angelina Ballerina, The Very Merry Holiday Musical, and Julius Hyman in the new musical Rachel, which earned him the 2015 Fresh Fruit Festival Outstanding Featured Performer Award. He received critical acclaim in the play Jackson Heights 3am, recorded Spring Awakening with StageStars, helped develop new musicals including Street Lights for the New York Musical Theatre Festival and Go West, directed by Jamie King, and has shared the concert stage with Broadway stars Tom Wopat, Carol Woods and Bianca Marroquín.

His regional theatre credits include Thénardier in Les Misérables, Evita, and Thalia/Young Danny in Xanadu, The Musical at ZACH Theatre, the last earning him a B. Payne Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Musical; Juan in Altar Boyz at The Palace Theatre; Ritchie Valens in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story at Sierra Repertory Theatre; Padamadan/Nikos in Legally Blonde at Merry-Go-Round Playhouse; the Piragua Guy in In the Heights at Axelrod PAC; and Pepe in West Side Story at Theatre by the Sea, directed by Bob Richard and choreographed by Diane Laurenson.

In New York cabaret, Roberto won a Bistro Award for his solo concert I Just Wanted You to Know at The Green Room 42, and his autobiographical concert Do You Dream in Spanish? earned him a second Fresh Fruit Festival Award. His newest show, Wait ‘Til You See What’s Next, directed by Mónica Huarte with musical direction by Yasuhiko Fukuoka, plays one night only on Friday, November 13.
